Genre: Murder mystery
Title: THE HOUSE OF BALESTROM
Author: William Butler
Warning! Reading this novel may cause anyone belonging to the 99% to have a very low opinion
of the super rich 1%. This murder mystery has all the elements of a gothic who done it: a mansion on an island and a host of characters who might be guilty of multiple crimes. but are certainly guilty of making other’s lives miserable, and reminds me a bit of an Agatha Christie story, but without a Miss Marple. To get to the quick of it, the story begins when a school teacher, Sara, and her school teacher husband, David, are asked to attend a funeral on a private island by her sister, Susan, whose husband Victor, died as a result of a boating accident or was murdered. Susan is presumed guilty of murdering her husband by most of Balestrom family and Sara begins to doubt the innocence of her sister she tries to defend as evidence mounts that her sister has lied and keep secrets from her for years. Just for starters, the recently widowed Susan never let her sister Sara know she was married until asking her to come to the funeral and this wasn’t the first time she has become a widow. Twice before she was married to rich men and twice before her husbands died under mysterious circumstances!
The plot line follows many twists and turns, woven with numerous lies and deceptions, plus the possibility of ghosts on the prowl, who might be guilty of some murders of their own! Innocence in this story proves to be a relative idea in the face of money and its power to corrupt even love. The Balestrom family does seem cursed but the curse might be no more than the result of the lies they tell to protect the family name and fortune. You be the judge.
William Butler, born in Morehead City, NC, has written several novels and short stories. He moved around a lot as a child, living in various places until his family settled back in NC, where he now lives. He runs the blog Bang Noir and writes articles for examnier.com.
Highly Recommended, especially for those who love trying to sort truth from lies and discover who is guilty of what. Reviewer: Peter Klein Allbooks Reviews.
